BYU Sets Records In Bear Bachmeier's Debut — Here's All The Reactions

BYU and Bear Bachmeier couldn't have asked for a better start.

Becoming just the eighth true freshman to start a game at BYU and the first to start
the season opener, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound dual threat quarterback made sure to make the most of it as he completed 7-of-11 passes for 97 yards and three touchdowns.

More importantly, he didn't turn the ball over and also rushed for 32 yards and two scores to finish with a rating of 227.7 as the Cougars rolled to a 69-0 victory inside LaVell Edwards Stadium in front of a sold out crowd of 64,494.

It was a record setting night for BYU as the team broke the record for largest shutout in program history. The previous record was set in 1988 when the Cougars shutout New Mexico, 65-0.

Despite only playing a half, Bachmeier accounted for five total touchdowns, becoming the only true freshman quarterback to do so. With the win, the Cougars are now 9-1 in season openers under head coach Kalani Sitake.

The Cougars recorded 606 total yards of offense, the most since the 2020 Boca Raton Bowl against UCF (655). The team also recorded the second-most rushing yards in program history with 468 on the night.

Last but not least, Will Ferrin's 56-yard field goal in the third quarter tied the school record for longest made field goal in program history. The record was held by Owen Pochman, who made a 56-yarder against New Mexico in 2000.
