BYU rallied to beat No. 10 Texas Tech Saturday night in the final game of the regular season.
The Cougars used a big second half from AJ Dybantsa and Robert Wright III to take down the Red Raiders, 82-76 in front of another sold out crowd at the Marriott Center. The victory was the second win in the past month over a Top 10 team at home, and the win was much-needed as the Cougars came into Saturday’s contest on a three-game losing streak, that felt much longer than that.
Dybantsa — who many expect to be the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft this year — finished with 21 points to go with a team-high four assists and six rebounds. The freshman sensation played all 40 minutes and hit clutch shots in the second half to help the Cougars hold on for the win.
With another 20-plus point performance, Dybantsa recorded his 24th game this season with at least 20 points. That total ties him with Danny Ainge (1980–81) and Tyler Haws (2014–15) for the fifth-most such games in a single season.
Wright led all scorers with 27 points — including going 9-for-9 from the free throw line — as the sophomore bullied his way to the basket. In fact, Wright made his first seven shots after halftime with much of those shots being layups as he took advantage of his size over the smaller Red Raiders guards. With another 20+ point performance, the sophomore has now done so in four consecutive games for the first time in his career.
Kennard Davis Jr. chipped in 16 points and was the only other player to score in double figures for the Cougars. Davis, who missed his first five attempts from beyond the arc, got going in the second half and made 4-of-5 from deep in the second half comeback. BYU dominated the paint, outscoring Texas Tech 48-14, thanks to 20 offensive rebounds.
Texas Tech was led by Donovan Atwell and Christian Anderson who each had 23 points apiece. Anderson led the way with a game-high nine assists, with Jaylen Petty chipping in with 14 points. Texas Tech (22-9, 12-6) was handed its second consecutive loss for the first time since January.
Both BYU and Texas Tech have been hit hard by injuries with BYU’s Richie Saunders and Texas Tech’s JT Toppin both going down with season-ending ACL tears just days apart last month. Both players were well on their way to being on the All-Big 12 First Team. Now both sides are trying to figure out their lineups with the NCAA Tournament just two weeks away.
